People - Issue 18

It was at the age of sixteen, just before the exams of high school's second grade... I sitting in our living room with my mother, in Volos city, drinking coffee while the TV was on. Eventually this holy woman said: "If you don't fail your school exams this year, you can have any present you'd like". (Imagine how many compliments I had) and I immediately said "Any...?". And she sincerely responded, "Yes!". Eventually I passed the exams! Then, I said, "We're good now"! We were both happy, so I asked her about the present and she said "what do you want?” and the answer was simple "a tattoo!!!". After a short dialogue, she said ok and gave me the money to do it  (she was also the one to put aftercare cream on me just after getting the tattoo done, since it was located on my back; between the shoulder blades). This is how I met and experienced the supreme art of tattoo for the first time.

Things then were more simple and easier. I left home to study at the department of fine arts of the French Institute of Thessaloniki. The city itself gave me stimuli and therefore I managed to discover music and socialize with people who were in touch with the tattoo art either as artists or as "canvases". It was then that the tattoo machines started for good. It was also then that I really understood the value and uniqueness of each tattoo, whether one has it on his own body, or he just admires watching it on someone else.  Luckily, I met artists who were really experienced and genuine guys who did this job because they liked it. I was fortunate to have tattoos by some of them.

Finally, two years later, I found myself studying architecture and decoration in Athens and it was there where my whole life changed! Even more stimuli, even more music and even more tattoo artists!

I firstly met the people with whom we have created the band that I'm singing for, Anal Veritas, for twelve years (!!!), which finally turned out to be not just a band that makes rehearsals and concerts, but a new family. I also found my "doctor", because a tattoo artist is like a doctor! If you find who “suits” you, you don't change him!

Ultimately what I understood is that "tattoos connecting people", without poser and macho attitudes. It is pure art. It is an expression and carries you up to your grave. You have to respect it because you'll carry the work, inspiration and creativity of a man whom you let tattoo on you forever and then again, and he also has to respect his "canvas".

Go on getting "dirty"!
