Manolis Vasilis

People - Issue 14

Appetite for destruction ... I remember holding Guns'n'Roses album on my hands at the age of twelve and the first thing that I thought when I looked at the cover was "I want to have this tattooed on me"... So when I became eighteen, I started my own trip with "youth gone wild" on my right hand. It was something more than a "simple" first tattoo, because of the importance of the phrase meaning that meant the beginning of my new life. It's hard to be the good guy in Greece when you have so many tattoos and piercings. Indeed it is like starting a new life. Nevertheless, I kept all my normal activities and I was ignoring the criticism and "smart sayings" by clueless people without any serious knowledge. I have been playing volleyball for fifteen years; about as long as I have been playing drums. These are the things that I love to do in my life and I would never quit doing them. I will always find time to rock the drumset and give battles on the net. Therefore, my next tattoos will have a corresponding theme. Tattoo is more than just a nice design and a fashion display. It captures the experiences of your own life, which you want to carry forever with you. I believe that a body can only support this kind of tattoos. Those that immediately travel you at the very same experience, as the person who has them. I want to have many experiences in the rest of my life and be able to 'put them' on my body until I fill it with color. Life is a journey and the body is the chariot... and it's very nice to paint the wagon after each destination.

Name: Manolis Vasilis
Profession: Employee.
Residence: Argyroupolis, Athens.
How many tattoos do you have?

11 large ones, but I like to call them 'a large one'.

Which artist(s) did your tattoos?

Nick Gismo (ex Fixin'touch).

Which tattoo is your first and which one was your latest?

My first tattoo was 'youth gone wild' on my right arm and the latest one is the starting of the sleeve with the roses.

Which tattoo is your favourite and why?

I love them all equally, since I've chosen them for my body. An emotionally 'special' one is the 'A' on my neck, because it is the initial of most of my family members' names.

Which tattoo artist do you admire?

I admire Nick Gismo because I know how he started his career and also because it was with him that I started my own circle. He has a great imagination and captures it perfectly.

Which tattoo style do you like best?

I really like the artists' new age work and I love the leopard backgrounds, like those that I have on my right arm.

Do you regret getting any of your tattoos, if so why?

I knew that I would regret it even before I had it done, so I was ready for the cover up.

Have you done a cover up and if so what exactly?

The concrete 'repentant' tattoo; a portrait beneath the roses of my right hand.

Have tattoos affected your life? If so, in what way?

It has more influenced the lives of those around me, as their behavior is what has changed. I feel the same, I do the same and will stay the same.

Do you have an activity of yours that you would like to mention?

I have been playing drums in various bands (LIME, Schooldrivers, Telos Epohis, Wild Machine) and now I have been preparing a new project with my buddy and guitarist Kostas Kafantaris and hopefully we will soon get into the recording studio in Sweden. I have also been playing volleyball for 14 years and have gone through various local teams (Acadimos, Panathinaikos etc.).
