People - Issue 9

I've always liked tattoos since I was a little girl because of my beloved uncle who had many. I did my first at Anna, Jimmy's daughter, when I became nineteen. At that time Jimmy's was the most famous studio in Athens. Since then I have done many tattoos. Especially in the last year, after my collaboration with the tattoo artist Giannis Barouxis (Paroxysm Tattoo) and the creation of "Popeye Loves Olive" - an alternative space in the center of Athens - my love for the tattoo became an adoration! Sometimes while I design jewelry, I find myself dreaming of tattoos. It has happened to descend from my workshop and say to Giannis "tattoo me this design now!”. All my tattoos, are symbolic for me.

Name: Erato
Profession: Contemporary Jewelry Designer.
Residence: Athens.

How many tattoos do you have?

I have never understood that question. How can they be divided?

Which artist(s) did your tattoos?

Anna (Jimmy's), Elizabeth Rozaki, Giannis Barouxis.

Which tattoo is your first and which one was your latest?

The first one was a Tinkerbell on my waist by Anna and the latest one a Mandala on my elbow by Elizabeth.

Which tattoo is your favourite and why?

My favorite is the Mendhi one on my hand, because I adore India, and after my trip there I love their culture even more.

Which tattoo artist do you admire?

Jeff Gogue, Carlos Torres, Victor Portugal and of course Giannis Barouxis.

Which tattoo style do you like best?

Geometric, Mendhi, Mandala and paradoxically Old School. Very much!

Do you regret getting any of your tattoos, if so why?

Νο! For none of them!

Have you done a tattoo cover up?

No, and I would never do so. Instead, I have “fixed” my first one, a long time ago.

Have tattoos affected your life? If so, in what way?

They have brought me “closer” to people, since most of them ask me about them... This is a means of communication, after all!

Do you have an activity of yours that you would like to mention?

Lately, I have been curating exhibitions at “Popeye loves Olive”. I want to turn the space into an endless source of inspiration and art.
